Dilla Youth Day - February 7th, 2016

Though my work is mainly in concert photography, I also enjoy doing event photography that of course include music. I had the chance to volunteer and take photos at an event dedicated to J Dilla named “Dilla Youth Day”

So who is J Dilla? J Dilla was a producer and rapper whose produced albums for Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, and more. Dilla has been recognized as one of the artists to create a new genre of music called “neo-soul”. Though he passed away in 2006, his legacy still goes on. There is always one artist out there that would say Dilla has influenced them in some way. They are festivals/concerts dedicated to him such as the JDilla Weekend in Miami, Dilla Day Detroit, and many more.

A few weeks ago, I attended the 5th Annual Dilla Youth Day at the Charles H Wright Museum in Detroit. I was so happy that I was able to volunteer for this event.

Not only does the youth learn about the history of Dilla, but they were able to learn or expand new skills as well explore new passions. Even though this event is focus towards the youth, this event is great for parents to enjoy a day with their children, especially parents that are or have been involved in the hip-hop community or appreciate the music. Since this event is an all day event, they were many different types of workshops (learning to create beats, turntablism, emcee, etc..) as well performances.

The Foundation of Women in Hip-Hop did a great job putting on this event. I’m hoping to attend next year’s Dilla Youth Day.

 Enjoy the photos!
